George Chinnery, miniature portrait of a lady 1796

Photos

Description

A very fine watercolour miniature of a lady by George Chinnery (1774-1852), signed on the mount GC 1796. As Chinnery moved to Ireland at some point in 1796 it is not immediately clear if this miniature was drawn at his London studio in Sackville Street or in Dublin. The identity of the sitter is unknown, although she bears a passing resemblance to Mrs Conyngham painted in oils by Chinnery now in the National Gallery of Ireland collection. She was born Charlotte Greer, the niece of Sir John Hadley D'Oyly, 6th Baronet.

For further reading on the early portrait drawings of Chinnery and his subsequent travels to India and China please see 'George Chinnery 1774-1852, Artist of India and the China Coast' by author Patrick Conner.
