George I Giltwood Wall Mirror

Description

A very fine and unusually proportioned wall mirror in the George I style. Landscape frames, while common enough in the Queen Anne period, were relatively rare in the George I period.
Exceptionally sharp carving is in evidence all over the frame. Whoever carved this frame clearly knew his craft.
A three plumed crest arising from a shell is the upper centre motif. Balanced in the lower centre by an intricate scallop with sawtooth gesso cutting. The outer frame is surrounded by scroll and strapwork with garlands and acanthus leaves stylized in relief. The inner frame is another form of stylized acanthus leaf with shellwork edged by sawtooth gesso cutting. All on two forms of punched ground.
The gilded surface is as after stripping, cleaning and reburnishing. It may well have been regilded in the past as restoration was not uncommon.
Max width. 110 cm
Max height. 85 cm
The glass is 19th century.
