Description

A Traditional African Balaphone from the Gambia

A well made good if somewhat primitive looking instrument, related to our better known Xylophone, it is entirely hand made, with 14 hard wood keys and 2 rows of calabashes or hollow gourds which act as natural amplifiers, these are all strongly bound together with sisal and bark. The sound effect of the Balaphone is a gentle hollow ring which soothingly travels quite a distance and is typical of African Rhythmical music

This Balaphone has 14 notes, it is 28” wide , 46” long and 20” high
