Fine c.1900 French Cast Bronze Photograph Frame

Description

The late Victorian period French cast bronze photograph frame retaining the original folding easel stand, having a rectangular aperture within a frame decorated in high relief with floral swags and a maiden accompanied by a trumpeteering Cupid to either flank.

The frame is in very good condition with the easel back in sound operation, with a stamp ‘8925’ and the frame with no dints. The frame benefits from having its original glass to protect the photograph. We have not cleaned the frame, only the glass.

One of the earliest picture frames was discovered in an Egyptian tomb dating from the 2nd century AD. A Fayum mummy portrait in a wooden frame was discovered at a burial site in Hawara. Archeologists believe that the wooden frame suggests the portrait was hung in the owner’s home prior to burial.

Of a good size and quality, all this needs is a picture that can match its decorative decadence. Over to you.
