Description

The generously proportioned double-sided hand painted oak sign survives from the second quarter of the twentieth century with one side in saffron and ruby showing ‘Way Out’, the other ‘William Hicks Fruitier’ in teal, off white and black.

Double sided and once suspended, the board now with just the two holes to its top where two hanging hooks would have been, is bordered with a moulded frame and remains in super original order with no over painting or restoration. The joins to each corner are a little rickety and the piece remains un-cleaned.

We can only find one reference to a William Hicks, grocer and he operated in Canada in the early twentieth century though obviously we cannot be sure this is the same person.

It matters not, this is a wonderfully decorative piece of advertising, providing two signs for the price of one.
