Stylish Operational Art Deco Beanwy Electric Fan

Description

Surviving from the second quarter of the twentieth century the chrome, lacquered cast aluminium and enamel British made B&Y desk fan having a long flex and three pin British plug, the mechanism with induction motor, adjustable cradle and four twelve inch diameter blades, having military crows nest symbol to the rear, the art deco influenced circular stepped base with adjustable speed setting, the makers rating name plate to the underside showing model number 02E-12” and serial number M8202, amongst other specifications.

The fan is in operational order, and is surprisingly powerful, though it is not PAT tested and setting number one seems to be unreliable. This may be something to do when it was rewired, the ability for it to be on three separate speeds was ignored but this wouldn’t be difficult to remedy if desired by a qualified technician. We have given the fan a decent clean but it could be fully restored (though it doesn’t need major work) and PAT tested to complete the job if desired. There are some minor marks to the base, the chrome has rusting which is to be expected, and there is some dirt residue to the motor.

Not much is known of B&Y Beanwy Electrical of B&Y Works, Rushay Lane, Birmingham other than they were seemingly involved in parts for the motor industry (Bean cars were named after Jack Bean the MD) as well as heating and stoves. They went into liquidation in 1985.

Effortlessly bringing together an integration of stylish art deco design and quality engineering, this piece is appealing both aesthetically and mechanically. Cool in every sense.
