A Scarce Antique Canadian Red Ensign Flag c.1900

Description
The supple cotton Canadian red ensign with the Union Jack in the upper canton and ten part segmented badge including the symbols for each of the provinces which were then part of Confederation.Beautifully faded and soft to the touch, there are no tears or holes to the flag though some fraying to the edges. The greens, yellows and blues have now paled and the whole is wonderfully evocative of a by gone era.
This example bears the first design for the Canadian red ensign, used from 1868 before the design was standardised in 1921, dating this flag to that period. Within this period the flag included symbols for each of the provinces which were then part of Confederation, as each came into the Confederation.
An early example of its type, and as such, quite a scarce survival.
