Description

The small coconut, being brass hinged and opening to reveal a gold satin lined interior, possibly for sewing or pin storage, the whole surviving intact from the late nineteenth century.

The box is in good overall condition with no replacement parts.

Coconuts have been carved into boxes, and money boxes in particular, since the nineteenth century, though usually they consist of cups and covers rather than hinged and cut through the equator as we see in this example.

Sometimes elaborately carved, this example is in nice in its natural form, and would make a lovely gift.
