Description

The black painted pine pot cupboard or side cabinet, having a typical long panelled cupboard door with an unusual brass clench fisted handle, opening to reveal one shelf, below a semi-elliptical overhanging top, the original black and gold highlighted finish, in the aesthetic movement manner, now distressed commensurate with age, the whole sitting on a plinth base and surviving from the turn of the nineteenth century.

The cabinet shows masses of character with a good overall wear in the right areas, particularly to the top and bottom, commensurate with its age. The door opens smoothly with the carcass being structurally sound though being pine, fairly lightweight. There are two hairlines to the top as pictured. The design of the handle is unusual and adds further charm.

Antique pot cupboards were used in the bedroom to hold the chamber pot. That way if you had to get up in the middle of the night and "go" you wouldn't have to traipse outside in the cold to the outhouse. The cabinet would hold the pot out of sight until it could be emptied in the morning. This particular example may never have been used for this purpose and acts as a side cabinet or bedside table very effectively.

A very decorative and versatile piece of furniture that can be used in a myriad of different rooms and for just as many uses.
