Description

An engaging and personal little silver treasure, of rectangular form, engraved all over with vines, leaves and scrolls. At the centre of one side is a cartouche engraved with the monogram ‘J E A”. The case has spring-loaded hinges and is opened by a button at the top. Around the button is a metal loop for attaching to a chain, which is hallmarked with a lion, indicating sterling silver. There is no date or maker’s mark found on the box.

Similar in size to a vesta case, or a matchbox, this little box could have been used as a locket, to hold treasured items such as a lock of hair, a small likeness of someone, or a miniature bible perhaps. Whatever the original function, this little charm would be ideal for anyone who loves beautiful small things.
