Description

A very good quality, Antique, William IV, Scottish Silver Gilt Table Snuff Box made in by James Nasmyth of Edinburgh and dating from c1836. Scottish made snuff boxes are relatively rare and this is a very nice example.
The box has the Russian Imperial Monogram of Tsar Nicholas on the lid and possibly was made for the Russian Emperor Nicholas I (1796-1855). He reigned as Emperor of Russia from 1825 to 1855.
The inside of the base is hallmarked with the Monarch's Head duty mark, the Scottish thistle silver mark, the maker's mark JN for James Nasmyth, the Edinburgh castle town mark and date letter E for 1836/37. The inside of the lid similarly hallmarked.
The exterior of the box with lovely engine turned engraving to all the sides.
The lid with with an applied white gold and enamel crowned initial inset H set with diamonds, rubies and an emerald.
The box measures approximately 87mm x 58mm x 25mm.
The weight is 170.6g/6.01oz/5.48ozt.
