Rare Antique Pewter Tobacco Pot Manchester Inn

Description
A fascinating piece of historic pewter that will no doubt create interest in many sectors.Firstly is a wonderful piece of old pewter, secondly it will have interests for collectors of tobacciana & finally it will promote local interest within the City of Manchester.
We have acquired numerous documentation around this piece all of which will be included in this sale.
The Seven Stars Inn claimed that it was ‘The’ Oldest Inn in England having stood for 555 years - from 1356 to 1911. However this statement may not be correct. It appears that it may even be pre dated by another inn a few doors along, The Rovers Return was completed in 1306. The Seven Stars was demolished in the 1960 to make way for the Arndale Centre.
In 1605 Guy Fawkes and Robert Catesby are said to have stayed at the Seven Stars planning it is said, ‘The Gunpowder Plot’
Amongst our documents are several old images of the Inn & interior.
As for our piece it is a fine and rare Tavern, table top tobacco pot. It is beautifully inscribed (see images)
The top cover is an almost, 'machine fit' sliding down gently over the pot. Within the pot is the original tobacco press.
The whole, in excellent condition. A superb piece of historic Manchester.
Amazingly, our research has unearthed another identical table top tobacco pot of course without inscription. This second one had been on sale mistakenly offered under the wrong description. We have not offered this second one for sale as it may be of interest to the buyer of our Seven Stars piece.
