Description

This impressive early Victorian silver Christening Mug was made by Charles Reily and George Storer. It bears clear assay marks for London 1838. The repoussé decoration shows a boy being carried by a wolf to a monastery in a mountain landscape. This is believed to be a scene from a well-known tale from Russian folklore. It has been translated and retold many times as 'Prince Ivan & the Gray Wolf' It has a shell and scroll bracket base and a foliate 'S' scroll handle. The interior is gilded. It stands 10.5cms in height, 8cms in diameter and weighs 6.17ozt. There is a Ref. No. 196 engraved on the base. Overall, the piece is in excellent condition and would make a lovely christening gift.
