Description

Rare late 19th century Nepalese carved wood stick in the form of a snake,c1880. Nepalese people worship a number of serpent gods known as Nagas and there is a large Hindu festival dedicated to the deities (Nag Panchami). This is a beautifully carved representation of a snake god using the natural curves of the wood and would have been used at important ceremonies / festivals. The snakes head has been inset with bone (or animal teeth) to represent the eyes and teeth and it has a great tribal/primitive quality. The wood has taken on a lovely deep ,rich colour/patina following years of handling and use.
