Description

This mask and another similar were found during the demolition of a row of 17th century houses in an area of Barnstaple in North Devon that had been associated with the potteries of that area. As they were something that the finders had not come across before with they took them to the North Devon Athenaeum, just across town, where one of the staff identified the clay from which they had been made, a creamy colour, as having almost certainly having come from nearby Fremington. They too had not come across their like before but suggested that they had been fashioned in the likeness, in true or caricature form, of either a friend, local or perhaps a sailor. As to date they were less certain and put them "somewhere in the 19th century - or could be earlier"....adding that, in their opinion, these, mainly account of not have come across anything similar before, would likely not have been executed as part of their regular work but something done 'extracurricular' - either in or out of working hours.
