Description

Remarkable carved tribal African door, believed to be West African in origin and dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. Comprising a small door (just 14" wide and 41" tall) and frame. Carved from dense hardwood with multiple stylized figures and heads all with the same distinctive frowning features. The door is carved from a single board rather than joined panels. Note the knob to the outside but locking bolts on the inside meaning the door could only be secured or opened from within. Several holes to the edges of the frame presumably allowed the door to be lashed in place. Very good condition. Later fixings at the rear to hold the members of the frame together and allow the door to be wall mounted as a decorative object.
Width: 27" (68.5 cm)
Height: 54" (137 cm)
Depth: 5" (12.5 cm)
