Description

Rare pair of enigmatic early 19th century patinated cabinet bronzes of Greek warriors by the French Neoclassical artist Jean Pierre Cortot (1787-1843). Probably once again on the theme of the Battle of Marathon with one figure a version of Cortot's famous marble original 'Le Soldat de Marathon Annonçant la Victoire' (A soldier returns with news of victory) and the other probably Miltiades the Younger, victor of the Battle of Marathon. Well modelled, rare pair, both signed 'Cortot'. Presented on beautifully figured Breccia di Marmo Giallo block bases. France, circa 1830.
