Description

Here we have a fine quality George I Sterling Silver Table Spoon in the Hanoverian with Rat Tail pattern. The spoon has the initials H W engraved on the underside of the stem, as you would expect with Hanoverian spoons, which were laid on the table bowl down.

The spoon was made in London by silversmith John Holland (I) and dates to 1723. John Holland (I) registered his mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in London in 1720. He was an accomplished specialist spoon and flatware maker who was active in the 1720s and 1730s. John Holland (II), also a spoon maker, was probably his son and registered his own mark in 1739, remaining active throughout the 1740s.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, just a little rounding off of the tip plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 300 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The table spoon is 19.1cm / 7.5ins long and 4.1cm / 1.6ins wide across the bowl. It weighs in at a respectable 46.6g / 1.6oz / 1.5toz of solid Sterling Silver.

The spoon is bottom struck and there is therefore some distortion to the hallmarks but they remain okay to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter H for 1723 and the quatrefoil I.H with a star above and below makers' mark for John Holland (I).

Shipping in the UK is £13.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the spoon.
