Description

This is a stunning Cased Set of Six Art Deco Silver Gilt Coffee Spoons. These elegant spoons have slender, waisted stems with a Deco motif engraved onto the fronts. They come supplied in an octagonal box with a blue leather covering, a white satin lining in the lid and a black velvet tray. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The coffee spoons were made in Birmingham by silversmiths William Suckling Ltd and date to 1937, the height of the Art Deco era. William Suckling founded his company in Birmingham in around 1895. They initially produced electroplated wares but in 1922 the firm registered their first mark at the Birmingham assay office to produce Sterling Silver items alongside their electroplate manufacturing. They produced a wide range of silverware for the table and general domestic use before they finally ceased trading in 1965.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no significant loss to the gilding and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. The box is a little scuffed on the outside but the inside still looks smart and the hinges and clasp are in working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 10.4cm / 4ins long and the set of six together, unboxed, weighs in at a very respectable 53.2g / 1.9oz of solid Sterling Silver Gilt.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter N for 1937 and the S Ld makers' mark for William Suckling Ltd.

Shipping in the UK is £13.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the spoons.
