George V Silver Egg Cup & Spoon, 1913/16

Description
Here we have a very fine cased George V Sterling Silver Egg Cup and Spoon Set. The egg cup has a simple pedestal stem and a gadrooned rim around the top of the cup. The interior is gilded. The spoon is in the Hanoverian Shell pattern. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. The case has a black leather outer with dark blue satin in the lid and dark blue velvet on the tray. The set was made in Sheffield by noted silversmiths Atkin Brothers with the spoon dating to 1913 and the egg cup to 1916. Tracing its roots back to Thomas Law in the mid-18th century, the Atkin family took sole control of the business in 1840, first as Henry Atkin & Co and then from 1853 as Atkin Brothers. The firm manufactured both silverware and electroplate in Sheffield and also had a London showroom. They ceased trading in 1958.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 110 years. The hinge of the case has a little bit of give in it but it works well and the lid snaps shut securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The egg cup stands 6.8cm / 2.7ins high and is 5cm / 1.9ins in diameter. The spoon is 11cm / 4.3ins long. Both together, the set weighs in at a very respectable 54.1g / 1.9oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on both pieces are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter v for 1913 or y for 1916 and the H A makers' mark for Harry Atkin of Atkin Brothers.
