Description

This is a good looking Pair of Edwardian Sterling Silver Open Salts. The salts are cauldron shaped and stand on three ball feet with crimped top rims. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The salts were made in Sheffield by famous silversmiths Walker & Hall and date to 1908. Walker & Hall are one of the great names of English silverware. The firm was founded by George Walker in 1845 with Henry Hall joining in 1853 to form Walker & Hall. Hugely successful and very highly regarded they remained in business until they were merged with Mappin & Webb and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.

Condition is good, with just a very small, slight bruise to the body of one salt, no significant corrosion and the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 115 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each salt is 5.3cm / 2ins in diameter and stands 3.7cm / 1.4ins high. The pair together weighs in at a very respectable 63.6g / 2.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the sides of the bodies, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter q for 1908 and the distinctive W & H in a pennant makers' mark for Walker & Hall.

Shipping in the UK is £13.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the salts.
