Description

This is a charming late Victorian Sterling Silver Pepper Shaker. The shaker is in the form of a miniature Guernsey milk jug with a flat pierced lift off lid. The interior is gilded.

The pepper shaker was made by Saunders & Shepherd and assayed in Chester in 1897. Cornelius Saunders and Frank Shepherd began their partnership in London’s Holborn Circus district in 1878. This was a major centre for silversmiths, goldsmiths and jewellers for many years in the 19th and 20th centuries. The firm were both manufacturers and retailers, specialising in small silver items for personal or domestic use and registered marks in London, Birmingham, Chester and Sheffield. The company remained in business up until the late 1930s.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 125 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The shaker is 3.8cm / 1.5ins from lip to handle, 3cm / 1.2ins wide and 4.3cm / 1.7ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 21.2g / 0.75oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks,on the underside of the base, are a little rubbed but still okay to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter O for 1897 and the distinctive CS and FS either side of a star makers' mark for Cornelius Saunders and Frank Shepherd of Saunders & Shepherd.
