Description

This is a well made Pair of George III Sterling Silver Salt Shovels in the classic Old English pattern. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The salt shovels were made in London by renowned silversmith Charles Hougham and date to around the 1770s. Charles Hougham registered his mark at Goldsmiths Hall in London in 1769. He was a fine silversmith who primarily produced spoons and flatware but also some other good pieces of tableware. Charles’ brother Solomon took over the business after Charles’ death in 1793 and expanded the range of items they produced.

Condition is good, with no dings or dents, no salt corrosion, just a slight kink in the stem of one spoon and the superficial surface wear that you would expect after around 250 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each shovel is 8.9cm / 3.5ins long and the pair together weighs in at 13.5g /0.48oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are what you would expect in this period, just showing the lion passant for Sterlng Silver and the C H makers' mark for Charles Hougham of London.
