Victorian Silver Pepper Shaker, H. Woodward, 1900

Description
Here we have a charming late Victorian Sterling Silver Pepper Shaker. The shaker is in the form of a two handled loving cup or trophy cup. The interior is richly gilded and there are no initials or personalisation of any kind. The pepper shaker was made in London by Horace Woodward & Co and dates to 1900, the last full year of Queen Victoria's long reign. The firm was established around 1850 by George Cartwright and Joseph Hirons, with Horace Woodward joining as a partner in 1853. They were silversmiths and electroplaters, active in both Birmingham and London and were involved in the Great Exhibition (1851) and many other international fairs. In 1865 Woodward became the sole proprietor and the name of the firm was changed to Horace Woodward & Co. Woodward left the company in 1883 but it continued under his name until it was bought by Adie Brothers in 1919.
Condition is very good, with just one tiny ding in the body plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 100 years of good service. The pull off lid fits smoothly and securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pepper shaker is 6cm / 2.3ins from handle to handle, 3.8cm / 1.5ins in diameter and stands 6.7cm high / 2.6ins. It weighs in at a very respectable 49.9g / 1.76oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the outside of the body and the inside rim of the lid, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter e for 1900 and the distinctive H W & Co Ld makers' mark for Horace Woodward & Co Ltd.
