Early Victorian Silver Serving Spoon, York, 1839

Description
This is a well made early Victorian Sterling Silver Serving Spoon in the classic Fiddle pattern. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. The spoon was made in the City of York by silversmiths James Barber and William North and dates to 1839. James Barber was an important silversmith in the City of York in the first half on the 19th century. He worked both alone and in partnerships at different times with William Whitwell, George Cattle and William North. His various marks are most commonly seen on flatware and decanter labels but he also made a variety of tableware. He seems to have retired or passed away around 1860.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no wear to the tip and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 185 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The serving spoon is 22.5cm / 8.8ins long and 4.7cm / 1.8ins across the bowl. It weighs in at a very respectable 64.8g / 2.28oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. As is almost invariably the case with York silver, the specific York assay mark is not present, just the crowned leopard's head. The other marks are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the date letter D for 1839, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the J B over W N makers' mark for James Barber & William North.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by RoyalMail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the vaue of the spoon.
