George V Glass & Silver Biscuit Barrel, Sheff 1922

Description
Here we have a good size George V Cut Glass & Sterling Silver Biscuit Barrel. The glass jar has a flat base with star and feather cut panels around the body. It has a Sterling Silver top rim and swing handle. The Sterling Silver lift off lid is domed and stepped with a turned finial. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. The biscuit barrel was made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths Atkin Brothers and dates to 1922. Tracing its roots back to Thomas Law in the mid-18th century, the Atkin family took sole control of the business in 1840, first as Henry Atkin & Co and then from 1853 as Atkin Brothers. The firm manufactured both silverware and electroplate in Sheffield and also had a London showroom. They ceased trading in 1958.
Condition is extremely good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, no dings or dents in the silver and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 100 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The biscuit barrel stands 20cm / 7.9ins high with the handle upright and is 11.6cm / 4.5ins wide. The lid by itself weighs in at a very respectable 74.1g / 2.6oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the barrel weighs 756g / 26.7oz.
The hallmarks, on the outside of the top rim, the outside of the handle and the top of the lid, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter e for 1922 and the H.A makers' mark for Harry Atkin of Atkin Brothers.
Shipping in the UK is £13.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the biscuit barrel.
