Description

This is an elegant Pair of Art Nouveau Silver Plate Candlesticks. The sticks have scalloped square bases, weighted for stability, that are decorated with flowing foliage and flowers. The baluster shaped stems have organic leaf decoration and are topped by foliate knops. The sconces are in a waisted urn shape and have removable nozzles with floral decoration. The candlesticks are designed for narrow candles or tapers around 1.2cm in diameter.

The candlesticks were made in Sheffield by the famous company Walker & Hall and date to between around 1880 and 1910. Walker & Hall are one of the great names of English silverware. The firm was founded by George Walker in 1845 with Henry Hall joining in 1853 to form Walker & Hall. Hugely successful and very highly regarded they remained in business until they were merged with Mappin & Webb and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings, dents or damage, no significant plate loss and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each candlestick stands 12.3cm / 4.8ins high and is 6.7cm / 2.6ins square across the base. The pair together weigh 305g / 10.75oz.

The bases are marked with the famous Walker & Hall pennant bearing the letters W & H and have an A for high quality silver plate.
