Description

A stylish and supremely comfortable Regency Library Armchair, of Gillows pattern, upholstered in very light blue damask: the deeply shaped back flanked by scrolled arms which form part of the Lyre-shaped and reeded mahogany frame. Splayed rear legs with turned and reeded fronts in the original brass cups and casters.

This chair has rock solid framework with no ricketiness or wobbles. The upholstery, although old and slightly worn and with some detached braiding, is supportive, properly sprung and has a sumptuous feather cushion. Show wood has the knocks and nudges of around two hundred years of use - the very worst being an inept, but sturdy, ancient repair to the right rear leg - the hallmark of a well loved and relaxing seat.
Can be confidently dated to the first quarter of the 19th century

Height - about 40 inches Width overall - about 28 inches Width of seat - about 20 inches Depth of seat - about 23 inches Heaight of seat (without cushion) - about 15 inches.

: Lyre fronted Library Chairs such as this are known Gillows pattern and similar ones made by them featured in a number of homes they furnished during the Regency Period including Mere Hall and Hackwood Park .
