Description

A very decorative pair of vintage Italian carved hanging masks or mascarons each crisply carved as a man with his eyes and mouth wide open, their heads crowned by a stylised shell, in a Baroque or late Renaissance manner. Mascarons are carved faces usually frightening or chimeric, often hung near doors or entrance whose function was originally to frighten away evil spirits so that they would not enter a building, subsequently adapted into decorative items. This pair dates from circa 1930s.

Stained wood - possibly walnut.

In good condition. There are some marks and scuffs commensurate with age.
