Primitive farmyard painting of pigs. George Morland
This is an absolutely charming antique oil painting on canvas of pigs and a cavalier spaniel in a farmyard setting.
Artist: Attributed to George Morland (1763 -1804).
Oil on Canvas.
Framed dimensions: 37cm high, 42cm wide, 4cm deep
The old hand written script on the back of the frame cites 'Pigry in farmyard by George Morland'
The painting is unsigned but very much in the manner of George Morlands work.

The ebonised outer frame and slip are 19th C.
George Morland (1763 - 1804). Fate seemed to have dealt this talented artist quite a cruel hand throughout his life. From a young age his artistic skills were recognised and pushed very hard by his father who exploited his work for his own ends, locking him away and forcing him copy other artists works such as Dutch masters for him to sell and profit from.
Later in life he broke free of his fathers control only to become effectively a slave to the picture dealer he lived with. Hard work, hard drinking and exploitation seemed to be the story of his life.
Country life, pigs and farmyard scenes in the manner of this painting were very much the subject matter familiar to him.
