Oil Portrait W.Muirhead by John McGhie c1914
Beautifully painted portrait of Mr.William Muirhead of Messrs. William Muirhead (Limited) Mount Vernon Iron and Steel Works. A highly esteemed amongst the world of industrial iron and steel. This wonderful and incredibly lifelike portrait was painted in 1916. J.McGhie is a highly collected artist and this is a rare portrait, he was fanous more for his seascape and fishing life paintings. This may have been done as a favour for the family as few portraits exist.
Painted by the eminent artist, JOHN MCGHIE (Scottish 1867 - 1952) painter and etcher who studied at Glasgow School of Art, the Royal Academy Schools and at Académie Julian, Paris. He became known for his paintings of the sea and fishing life, with Pittenweem, Fife, a favourite location, although he maintained a studio in Glasgow, where he was a member of the Art Club, president of the Society of Etchers and showed prolifically with the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. McGhie also showed at the RSA, RA, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, RSW, elsewhere in the English provinces and abroad. Public collections in Glasgow and Liverpool acquired his works. His An East Coast Fishing Village was offered from the Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation collection by Christie’s, South Kensington, in 2002. McLean Museum and Art Gallery, Greenock, owns McGhie’s work.
