Military Portrait of a Georgian Infantry Officer
An early Victorian pastel portrait of Georgian Period Peninsular War Veteran Lt Henry Butterworth 32nd Regiment of Foot with superb decorative gilt frame and original glazing.

The portrait depicts him in full dress uniform with both his Waterloo and Peninsular medals which must date this picture to after 1847 and before 1860 which was the date of his death in Rochdale, Lancashire. The Military General Service medal for the Peninsular was not released until 1847 and his clasps correctly represent his presence at the Battles of Roleia, Vimiera, Talavera, Salamanca, The Pyrenees & Nivelle although there is some speculation amongst the sources as to whether he was also present during Corunna. He was listed as sick during the final battles that the 32nd took part in, namely Nive and Orthes and from then on he must followed his Regiment in 1817 to the Ionian Islands until their return three years later.

The small research I have so far undertaken shows Lt Henry Butterworth to have been severely wounded at the Battle of Salamanca 22 July 1812 and then three times wounded during Waterloo whilst serving in Thomas Picton’s Division. He remained with his regiment throughout the day at Waterloo and retired from the service on half pay due to ill health in 1820 at which point he was transferred to the 35th Regiment of Foot.

A significant piece of Peninsular War history which has come directly from family ownership
