An English fusee dial clock with ebonized case, Brass Bezel and a 12 inch painted dial with blued steel hands, signed J Smith Kendal.
Kendal, is a market town in the English Lake District. The County was then called Westmorland and is now Cumbria

The movement is a single fusee 8 day with a brass pendulum. The clock has been serviced.

The movement case has a side door to access the pendulum, and a curved door on the base to access to the pendulum rating nut.
One of the fixing pegs is a replacement.

James Smith was born in Kendal in 1853, and in 1877 married Sarah Ann Alexander, whose father, Jonas Alexander was a well known Kendal brewer who was established in 1822.

When his two children were born 1878/87 James was described as a Jeweller of Church View, Aynam Road (opposite the river side of the Parish Church.) by 1879 he was at 26 Highgate and was still there in 1885 when he was described as a goldsmith and engraver.
In 1894 he was trading as J & JT Smith and was still at 26 Highgate
