Early 19th c watercolour Welsh satire Watercolour cartoon caricature
On a journey to a courtship in Wales - an original pen and watercolour drawing taken from a 1795 etching by Richard Newton. Newton was a gifted caricaturist who died in 1798 at the age of 21. His work was often published. This is not by Newton’s hand, but someone who has been inspired to sketch and paint a watercolour of the original. It depicts a groom in livery following his master through the Welsh mountains. Interestingly, leeks is spelled incorrectly in this watercolour whilst being correct in the original etching. It is a satire on what was seen at the time as the Welsh interest in pedigree - the scroll containing this list of names of his ancestors.

In a later frame.
