Dutch Old Master Style Painting By Gudrun Sibbons
DUTCH OLD MASTER STYLE LANDSCAPE OIL PAINTING ON CANVAS BY GERMAN ARTIST GUDRUN SIBBONS B1925 30 X 24 INCHES.
DESCRIPTION.
We are very pleased to offer for sale,this fine Dutch old master style oil landscape painting on canvas, which beautifully captures the realistic atmosphere by artist GUDRUN SIBBONS.
SIGNATURE
The artist has clearly signed the painting in the lower right hand corner.
The painting depicts a Dutch coastal scene, with a couple of fishing boats drawn up of the shore, with several ladies gathered around them and cargo being unloaded.
There is a man standing holding the reins of a white horse, which is wearing harness and a black and white dog sits nearby.
The houses to the left of the painting have lit windows and there is a church further along the shore.
This painting features one of the artist's typical dramatic skies, with the sun hidden behind a cloud and shafts of sunlight breaking through.
Please note that this painting is much larger than the usual paintings by this artist, which are normally 20" x 16" or 16" x 12" and we have only found 3 others of this size in the auction records, and one 36" x 24".
ABOUT THE ARTIST GUDRUN SIBBONS.
She was born in 1925 in Annaberg in Silesia, Germany. Her studies took her to Berlin, Breslau and Hamburg, when WWII intervened and during this period, she served as a nurse.
After the war, she was working as a secretary, when she met her future husband Bill Sibbons, a professional portrait painter.
They moved to London and married in 1949. She worked as a laboratory assistant, whilst painting as a hobby.
She started selling her paintings on the Hyde Park railings in the late 1940's and after later selling paintings to such famous people as David Niven and Erroll Flynn, became an instant success and her paintings have attracted much interest and high prices ever since. She now lives on the south coast.
Her paintings are in oils and she specialises in landscapes and coastal scenes in the Dutch old master style, with powerful skies reminiscent of Turner.
Auction prices achieved for works by this artist may be found at artprice (167 listings), findartinfo(98), arcadja(76) and artnet (42). There are paintings smaller than this by Gudrun Sibbons for sale at galleries on google for £3,250.

CONDITION
The canvas is very clean and taut, with no repairs or stretcher marks,having been recently relined.
The swept frame is in excellent condition.
