A.Trevor Haddon RBA 1864-41 Oil Portrait Gentleman Arthur Trevor Haddon RBA 1864-1941 %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are delighted to present this superb portrait oil on canvas by the renowned artist Arthur Trevor Haddon, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. As he has put RBA after his signature, this dates the portrait to after 1896. The artist painted portraits of notable people, MPs, military men, industrialist, members of the aristocracy and the church.

The painting depicts a three quarters profile portrait of a very distinguished looking gentleman with silver hair and friendly mutton chop whiskers. (Apparently in the mutton chop whiskers meet with a moustache, they are know as friendly mutton chops and come under the heading of imperial beards.) He is wearing a dark grey suit with waistcoat, a grey patterned cravat with cameo stickpin and a white shirt with matching handkerchief. His gold watch chain is visible across the front of his waistcoat. As yet, we have been unable to discover his identity, but if anyone recognises him, we would be delighted to hear from you.

ARTHUR TREVOR HADDON 1864-1941, was a portraitist, illustrator, watercolourist and author. He painted in both oils and watercolour and also used pastels. He received a three year scholarship of £50 to the Slade School in 1883, where he studied under Legros. He was awarded a landscape prize and medal for painting in 1885. In 1886-7 he visited Spain and studied in Madrid. He returned to England and worked under Herkomer in Bushey from 1888-1890. He was elected Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1896. Lived in Rome 1896-7. He visited Venezuela in 1921 and Canada, the USA and Hawaii 1926-1930. He spent the winter of 1928 in San Francisco, where he had a studio at 1990 California Street and his first US Exhibition at the Paul Elder Gallery.

He exhibited 1883-1939, mainly at the Royal Academy, The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and Suffolk Street. One man shows were held in London at the Leicester Galleries (1902), Chenil Galleries (1906) and Dore Galleries (1908). He painted many Spanish and Italian scenes, his Venetian scenes achieving very good prices.

He exhibited 19 works at the Royal Academy, 178 at the Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Oil Painters Institute 11, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour 13, Dudley Gallery 28, Walker Art Gallery Liverpool 11 and various other London and Provincial galleries. His exhibitions up to 1893 are listed in Graves Dictionary.

He was the author of 'The Old Venetian Palaces', 'Southern Spain', and other works. He lived mainly in London, but moved to Cambridge latterly and died there at 67a St. Anderew Street, on the 13th December 1941. According to Probate records his effects totalled £1,187 18s. and 9d.

He was married to Emily Blanche Edith from 1892 (although we can find no record of the marriage) and they had three children, Hubert C born 1893/4, Barbara J born 1895/6., and Geoffrey Maurice Maxwell, born 1897.

His biographical details are to be found in The Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters, The Dictionary of British Artists and The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood.
