An early American Abstract Mixed media / Ink on woven paper of four abstract figures . American abstract artist Lester Epstein (1919 -1963 ) signed and dated 1951 .
Professionally mounted in a contemporary chrome frame with uv glass .

American Artist Lester Epstein 1919-1963
Lester Epstein made an important contribution to early American Abstract expressionist & experimental Art .Painting during the late 1940s early 1950s at the very beginning of the American abstract expressionist art movement .

Lester was Born in St Louis USA on the 4th Sept 1919 & later attended Washington University . He spent 4 years in the US army during WW2 serving in the pacific.

In 1950 he set off for a Mexican fishing village where he lived for 9 months painting furiously creating a large number of paintings . While in Mexico he was discovered and became good friends with The British artist John Rattenbury Skeaping RA , first Husband of the Sculptor Barbara Hepworth . On the recommendation of John Skeaping , Lester Epstein received a scholarship at Royal College of Art in London England . John Skeaping described Lester as having a rare talent and deserved to be well known while is was still alive . John Skeaping Lester Epstein went on to hold several joint exhibitions .

Lester Epstein also held exhibitions in Mexico, America , London , travelling extensively throughout Europe .
On returning to the United States , Lester became an integral part of the artistic community in New Orleans and was known by some as the St Louis Gauguin .
Lester Epstein also worked at the Delgado Museum as registrar .

The Delgado Museum in New Orleans held a retrospective exhibit of his work in 1964 following his unexpected death in 1963 at 44 years of age .
