1862 teacher's scripture - Robert Thompson
This is a lovely example of a 19th century teacher’s work in the form of the Lord’s Prayer. This is the work of Robert Thompson aged 18 of Gilling, nr Richmond in North Yorkshire. Thompson was already a teacher at the age of 17. The son of a shoe maker, Thompson was born in 1844. By 1881 he had left his native Yorkshire to become an elementary teacher in Sunderland. This well-executed pen and ink work details the Lord’s prayer in a variety of fonts and styles showing not only his ability to read and write, but also his ability to draw using different letters and styles. It is not often pieces like this survive, rarer still that they are dated and named by a man. We often see examples such as this in the form of samplers - the vast majority of which are the works of young girls and young ladies.
