16th Century Spanish or Italian Mortar
Fabulously decorative, this 16th century Spanish bronze mortar has an eyecatching and muscular presence.
Extremely heavy, it is decorated with masks, interspersed with lugs.
It is in wonderful condition. This mortar has been well used - it spins gently when prodded with a finger - the sign of many years pounding with a pestle.
It rings musically when 'pinged'.
This mortar is similar to one I had in stock some time ago. However, this mortar appears to have been made by a different foundry. The casting and modelling of the lugs, and the proportions are different also the bronze has a more silvery sheen.
I had originally thought that mortars of this type were 18th century, but was corrected by Michael Finlay, (author of 'English decorated bronze mortars and their makers'), who believes mortars of this type to be much earlier, 16th century.
