12” Fusee Dial Wall Clock by Victor Kemp 1888
We present for consideration, this exceptional fusee wall clock with 12” dial, by maker Victor Kemp of Rotherfield, on the county borders of Sussex and Kent.
Born 1856 in Groombridge, Kent, Kemp spent most of his early clockmaking years working successfully out of this idyllic rural location. However, from c1883 Kemp had moved his operations to near-by Rotherfield in Sussex, working from High Street in the parish towns’ centre, where this clock would have been made.
From 1895, records indicate that he was once again back at Groombridge, working from at Station Road, and at some later stage still, must have moved to the main market town in the area, Tunbridge Wells, where he passed away in the summer of 1935 aged 80 years old.
The clocks turned Mahogany roundhead face and boxed cabinet has good, aged patination, with two hinged inspection doors located on each side of the box and an operable lockable regulator door located at the bottom of the box. The clocks metal dial has black Roman numerals with Kemps details, finished with its pair of blued Spade hands, secured with a pinned collet. The clocks dial is then protected by glaze mounted in a lockable cast brass bezel.
The clock benefits from a fabulous high quality 8-day single fusee chain driven movement set between 4mm thick rectangular plates and turned pillars and comes with a 75mm diameter pendulum bob and a fusee brass winding key.
This really is an extremely well-made, high specification dial clock by a noted and documented southern England clockmaker, so if you are looking for a quality Victorian dial clock for that certain wall, this one comes highly recommended!
