Description

A large decorative 19th century European or English classical oil on canvas and set within a later gilt frame. The painting depicts a pair of cherubs sat upon a marble mantle with each holding up a red curtain, in between them is a octagonal scene most likely depicting Apollo in his chariot pulled by his four horses Pyrois , Aethon, Phlegon and Eous. The hooded man is possibly Hephaestus, and the women most likely Helios sister Eos, Hyacinthus and Marpessa both Apollos loves. The picture is beautifully painted and in excellent condition, the surface has some age related craquelure and one tiny restoration to one of the horses. On the back is some old chalk writing , Sainsbury 104.
