Study Male Nude Sitting
Gwen May

1928

A beautifully observed and executed piece of a seated male model by this accomplished and well known artist. The subject is in a classic pose akin to Rodins sculpture, The Thinker. This drawing is one of 8 in a folio of recently discovered life drawings by the artist, all of which date from the 1920's and the subjects just exude the character and style of the Roaring Twenties in their faces, hairstyles and poses.

CONDITION Signed and dated. In excellent condition, mounted on acid-free, modern backing board and surround. Ready to be framed. ARTIST INFORMATION The highly accomplished drawings and etchings of Gwen May are seldom found today. Her subjects range from views of Holland Park Mews to deeply rural subjects such as Milking Shed and life drawings. Aside from her few London views, she is known to have worked extensively in and around the areas of Stratford-upon-Avon and Mousehole in Cornwall she also travelled to Spain and Portugal in search of subjects for her plates. Gwen May was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and an accomplished wood engraver and watercolourist, exhibiting at the Royal Academy regularly in the pre-war years. A commemorative award for etching and engraving named after Gwen May is presented every year at the National Print Exhibition.
