Description
A fine quality Charles II chest in two parts with all original timbers and superbly rich natural colour and patination. The chest has a very rarely seen secret slide drawer – original – which is accessed by removing the top drawer and then pressing a release button which allows the drawer to spring open.
The carcase is solid hand hewn wainscot oak with fielded panels and original back and base boards all set on original stile feet which are continuous with the frame.
The front with beautifully carved geometric mouldings which frame veneers of laburnum, walnut, ebony and fruitwood.
The hand cast brass handles are early replacements, with star shaped back plates and single drops – these are very old with soft wear and patina and are entirely correct in style for period.
With provenance having been purchased from Trevor Micklem Antiques in Somerset on 10th April 1983 and remaining in the same ownership these last 43 years. The original receipt will come with the chest.
This is a very rare and beautiful early English chest of drawers made by hand in c. 1680 and a bespoke piece that was made for a wealthy and discerning client. It exhibits all of the highest quality details in construction, in execution of the mouldings and in the choice of exotic veneers - and in that very unusual secret drawer – of truly excellent colour and condition throughout.
