Description

A particularly lovely oak armchair of simple linear form and with a truly excellent colour and patina from over 250 years of use and care.

Oozing charm and history, the chair was made in c. 1760 and was purchased many years ago from a Llanddoged farm house, Conwy, North Wales. Oh what stories it could tell! Small exuberances such as the notched arms and channel carving to the back bars show the maker’s intention – functional and substantial but still deserving of fine detailing.

A comfortable adults chair, with a wide deep seat and a good height to the arms, the back supportive with a slight rake. The chair is extremely heavy for its size.

Peg jointed with original pegs and through tenons, with a small patched repair to the lower edge of the left arm which is an old professional restoration and which does not affect structure. Small marks and knocks consistent with age and use and some wear, as is always seen with original boards, to the front edge of the seat. Old worm tracks here and there but long since dead. Originally a kitchen fireside chair sat down on a slate or brick floor and used every day, the feet have typical wear, the box stretcher at a mid point.

The timbers are original throughout and the oak has developed a particularly lovely mellow golden tone.

The chair is in remarkably good condition given the centuries of daily use and has clearly always been much loved and well cared for.

A really good example of mid 18th century vernacular Welsh furniture.
