Description

This is a colourful wood carving from Swagap or Kupkein Villages on the Upper Sepik River Area of Papua New Guinea. Its deeply incised design combining stylised heads with abstract patterns is picked out in yellow, white and back ochre. These 'spirit or gope boards' as they were known were used by the clans in large scale displays, though this particular carving was most likely made specifically to trade with visitors in the mid 20th century or later.

In the last photograph it is shown with two other carvings acquired from the same source and, presumably, purchased in Papua New Guinea at a similar time.
