Description

This is a finely carved and black stained bamboo brush pot, Chinese, early 20th century. It depicts figures in a boat on a lake with houses and a temple nestling on a rocky and tree covered shoreline with mountains in the distance. There are two small paper labels on the base, one of which appears to have Chinese characters while the other bears the number 012. Their significance is unknown but they may indicate that the pot was once part of a collection. The black staining is probably original and may have been used to simulate ebony which was a more expensive and, hence, less widely used wood available to the Chinese artisans.

Dimensions: 19.5 cm height - 11.5 cm width - 10 cm depth
Weight: 388 g

Condition: The brush pot has some shrinkage splits including one which extends from the lip for a distance a little more than a third of the height, but the carving is in excellent condition and there are no losses. More photographs are available on request.
