Description

This is a pair of finely cast Japanese bronzed and gilded vases dating from the late 19th Century or early 20th Century.

Each vase has a figure to one side with a landscape on the opposing side. Each scene is framed within a shaped border and by a pair of Phoenix birds in flight with long trailing tail feathers.

One vase has a Samurai in full battle dress within a rocky landscape while the the other vase depicts an ornately robed goddess riding a dragon. The landscape scenes on the opposing sides depict bays with sailing ships against mountainous backdrops. Mount Fuji is displayed on one of these scenes.
There are no manufacturer's marks on the base.

Dimensions: 24 cm height x 13 cm diameter

Condition: They are in overall good condition though there are some scuffs and scratches commensurate with their age. Though it is not obvious one of the vases (right side vase in photo 4) has had a bang to the lip which has caused the join in the casting to open a fraction on the lip itself.
The vases have an attractive bronze patina but the metal is silver where the surface patination has been scratched suggesting they are made of Spelter.
