Harris & Sheldon Ltd Haberdashery Counter
This exceptional Harris & Sheldon Ltd haberdashery counter is a striking example of vintage craftsmanship. The counter features a mahogany base and legs, complemented by a brass frame which elegantly surrounds the glazed display area. Its structure comprises 20 graduating drawers, each fitted with beech fronts, wooden handles, and label inserts for easy organisation.
Dating from approximately 1940, the counter boasts a rich, mellow honey-coloured finish that has developed over time. It provides a generous display area in addition to ample storage space, making it highly versatile for both commercial and residential settings. Increasingly, these counters are sought after for use in kitchens, where they offer a practical and stylish alternative to traditional kitchen islands. Their functionality also extends seamlessly into craft rooms, reflecting a growing demand for such vintage pieces.
The glass top displays signs of use and previous ownership, testament to the counter’s long history. However, these minor scratches were not deemed significant enough to warrant replacement, and the original glass has been retained to preserve the item’s authentic character.

WORKSHOP REPORT:
Condition and Character
The glass top of the counter displays several very fine scratches, which are the result of previous use and ownership. These minor imperfections contribute to the item’s history and authenticity, and photographs are available upon request should further detail be required.
Additionally, some of the beech drawer fronts exhibit areas of discolouration, caused by where stickers that have been placed over the years. Rather than viewing this as a defect, it is important to recognise that such features are inherent to vintage or antique furniture. These marks are considered part and parcel of the item and help to enhance its unique character.
