Description

A stunning Georgian silver sifter spoon with a scallop shell bowl with wrythen fluting and very delicate and pretty piercings following the lines of the flutes. The thickly cast handle is in the Onslow pattern, has an engraved feathered edge, and splays out into a reeded form, finishing with the scroll terminal. Hallmarked for London 1768, maker initials WT, who was a specialist spoonmaker but whose name is unknown. A small family crest of a raised right arm with the hand holding an arrow is engraved behind the terminal.

It measures 17.5cm (6 7/8") long and 5cm (2") wide and weighs 49g (1.6ozt)

In good condition: there is a short split from one of the outer piercings to the edge. There are also some fine stress cracks in the centre of the bowl spanning some of the piercings, they don't appear to be splits all the way through and there is no movement in the area under pressure. Please see the photos for this detail. No other faults or repairs. Minor handling wear, the date letter is partially obscured by placement and there is some rubbing to the leopard's head and lion passant.
