Description

A lovely Bow porcelain sparrow beak cream jug painted in polychrome enamels with a Mandarin type Oriental scene of three figures in a landscape. Unusually clear, detailed decoration, the enamel colours have fired really well, the black often fades almost to invisible and the blues and green are often a muddy yellow tone. This is a superb example. Unmarked, c.1760.

It measures 7.9cm (2 15/16") high, 7.5cm (3") spout to handle and 6cm (2 3/8") wide.

In good condition with some very good quality professional repair work: the handle has been reattached near enough invisibly and the very top edge of the rim has some restoration. Clearly just some minor nicks and fridging have been filled and smoothed. The work is minimally detracting, it doesn't extend to the red detail around the rim, just right on the edge, with the touching up going slightly further down the inside to give a clean finish. There are a few small chips to the foot rim and only minor handling wear to the enamels.
